KnotAByte (knotabyte.com) is operated by Digitier, LLC of Riverside, California.

The website

Reading knotabyte.com needs no account. There are no forms, no advertising and no tracking cookies. Our hosting provider, DigitalOcean, keeps standard server logs (IP address, time, page requested) for security and troubleshooting.

The site remembers the port you pick for hotspots in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device.

The iPhone app

Charts, spots, hotspots and your GPS position work without an account, and your position stays on your phone.

If you sign in to use the radio or post fish reports, we store:

• An identifier from Sign in with Apple (not your name or email, and we never ask Apple to share them) and the boat name you choose.
• The messages and fish reports you post, including the position you attach. In public channels other boats only see an approximate position (for example "near the 181"); exact positions are shown only to you and to members of a crew you post in.
• Crews you create or join, boats you block, and posts you report.
• If you turn on KnotAByte Pro alerts: your phone's push notification token, your alert settings and home port, and, only if you turn on water-temperature alerts, the spots you choose to watch. Watched spots are used for nothing but those alerts and are deleted when you turn temperature alerts off.
• If you subscribe to KnotAByte Pro: Apple's record of the subscription (product, dates and transaction ids). Apple handles payment; we never see your card.

We use this only to run the radio and the fish reports, and to moderate them. We don't sell it or share it with advertisers. Fish reports may later help tune the fish finder, in aggregate.

You can delete your account in the app (Settings → Account → Delete account). That removes your account, messages, reports and crew memberships from our database.

Third parties your browser contacts

• Esri, for the ocean basemap tiles.
• Google Fonts, cdnjs and jsDelivr, for fonts and the open-source map libraries.

Each receives your IP address when it serves those files, under its own privacy policy. The AI briefing is written on our server from public NOAA data; nothing about you is sent to it.
